Deeper Worship Service
August 10 at 6:00 pm
featuring recording artist Kate Hurley

What? Our Worship Arts Pastor, Greg Russell, leads a team of veteran and “up and coming” musicians and worship leaders in about an hour of worship music. There is also usually a brief message followed by a time of prayer and ministry.
Why? For years we have sensed the need for a format allowing times of extended worship, prayer, and ministry in a congregational setting. Many SHV members have confirmed this as a “felt need.” Deeper is that place.
Who? We have participants of all ages. Deeper is for you.
Thoughts on Worship
By Greg Russell
Someone once said to me, “it seems like life with God is sometimes harder than it needs to be.” Indeed, some things that used to be easy seem harder now in the context of following Jesus. He never promised we wouldn’t experience hardship. In fact, James told us to “consider it pure joy” when we face trials (James 1:2-8).
One name always comes to mind when I think of suffering. Paul, the author of approximately 2/3 of the New Testament, was not sheltered from experiencing hardship. Read the account of his experiences in 2 Corinthians 11:23 – 29. Yet he counted it a blessing to “share in the sufferings” of Jesus (Philippians 3:10).
Paul encouraged us to follow his example as he follows Christ’s (1 Corinthians 11:1). One of Paul’s most poignant examples in the face of suffering is described in the book of Acts starting at verse 16. It is the story of how he and Silas were thrown into prison for doing the work of God. What was their response? In the middle of the night, after being “severely flogged” and thrown into a cell and bound in chains, they began to sing songs of worship to the Lord. Then, “suddenly” there was an earthquake, the chains came off and the jail doors came open. The experience was so powerful that the jailer and his family surrendered their lives to Jesus.
So, the next time you are experiencing difficulty in your journey with Jesus, reflect on the example that Paul left for us. Worship the Lord in your hardships. Worship releases God’s power in your life. Thank him for the opportunity to share in Jesus’ suffering.
