Real Community

A Story About Small Groups

As a counselor I talk with numerous people each week who are stuck or working through struggles.  Many people I talk with are searching for help and tools to “do life” better.  We all have things we need to face and work through.  One thing I have learned is that being involved in community is vitally important to our process or growth as individuals and families.

When my I started to attend The Vineyard, I was nervous about what to expect, but it felt like home. People were casual, not stiff and churchy.  And the authentic relationships drew me in.

I’ll admit it: I was a bit scared and apprehensive when first joining an in-home small group, but being in a small group is really where I started to flourish in my relationships with people at church.  It quickly became a welcoming place where friends met to encourage one another in their faith, and to deepen their walk with the Lord through Bible study and community.  I have developed rich and lasting relationships through attending a small group.

I was also cared for and mentored by other Christians in my small group.  It was a place where I gained confidence through opportunities to lead studies and participate in group discussions.  My SHV friends also helped me move and made me meals after I had my son; they encouraged and prayed for me when I was struggling and rejoiced with me when I had breakthroughs.  I love being part of an active Christian community where we walk out our faith in friendship.  That’s what it is all about.  We need each other to sustain our faith and to “serve one another in love” (Galatians 5:13).

If you haven't yet joined a small group I strongly encourage you to push past your anxiety about meeting new people.  Getting out of your comfort zone can be a big challenge.  However, the benefits of a small group and church community are well worth it.
